Buffalo chicken wings are one of the most popular bar foods in the United States, and their popularity is fast spreading across the UK too, but their origins are actually quite humble. The story goes that in 1964, Teressa Bellissimo, the owner of the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York, was trying to find a way to use up some leftover chicken wings. She decided to deep-fry them and toss them in a hot sauce that she had made. The wings were a hit with her son and his friends, and they quickly became a popular item on the Anchor Bar menu.
The Anchor Bar claims to be the originator of Buffalo chicken wings, but there is some debate about this. Another Buffalo restaurant, Wings and Things, also claims to have invented the dish in the early 1960s. It is possible that both restaurants independently came up with the idea of deep-frying and saucing chicken wings.
Whatever the case may be, Buffalo chicken wings quickly spread from Buffalo to the rest of the United States. They became a popular sports game-day food, and they were also featured in many restaurants and bars. In 1977, the city of Buffalo declared July 29th to be Chicken Wing Day in honor of the dish’s invention.
Today, Buffalo chicken wings are enjoyed all over the world. They come in a variety of flavors, including mild, medium, hot, and extra hot. They are also served with a variety of side dishes, such as celery, carrots, bleu cheese dressing, and ranch dressing.
